Cliff Stabilisation Walls, Lyme Regis

Carillion Civil Engineering secured this emergency project that needed 750mm and 1050mm diameter piles at the top of an unstable cliff to limit future ground movement.

Carillion Piling undertook this project using a modern lightweight high torque rotary piling machine. This lightweight machine was necessary to keep ground loadings from the piling machine within strict surcharge limits due to the instability of the cliff. Piles were 19m deep and either 750mm or 1050mm diameter. Pile bores had to be drilled through hard bands of limestone to reach the specified founding depth. Pile concrete was pumped into each pile from a remotely situated concrete pump in order to avoid placing any additional surcharge loads on the cliff from concrete delivery lorries.
