River Medway Bridge Crossing, Kent
The contract was for the upgrading and widening of the existing carriage way between Cobham and Junction 4. The work included the building of a new bridge over the River Medway.
Carillion Piling undertook the piling for the new River Medway Road Bridge. The value of the piling work was £2.25m.
Pile for the piers in the river were 2400mm diameter. These were constructed from cofferdams installed in the river. In order to cast the piles at cut off level which was about 5 metres below piling platform level, an ingenious system was devised to cast concrete to the desired level. This system enabled concrete waste and trimming to be minimised. In addition to these pier piles nine land based abutment caps were piled using 1200mm diameter piles. For all of the piles long temporary casings were installed to enable these piles to be constructed in dry conditions.
